Shoprite Holdings, Africa’s leading retailer, has solidified its standing as South Africa’s premier retailer in corporate transparency and environmental performance. Partly owned by South African billionaire Christo Wiese, the retailer has garnered recognition for its corporate transparency and commitment to environmental sustainability.
The renowned retailer has achieved an “A-” Leadership Level Rating from CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project), a global environmental non-profit organization. This accolade underscores Shoprite’s environmental stewardship and excellence in implementing strategies to mitigate climate change risks.

Shoprite, boasting more than 2,900 stores across Africa, is partly owned by South African billionaire Christo Wiese, who holds an 11.63 percent stake in the retailer. Wiese’s investment and influence have been instrumental in shaping Shoprite’s growth, emphasizing a commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices.
Sanjeev Raghubir, Head of Sustainability and CSI at Shoprite Group, reiterated the company’s commitment to sustainable practices. This encompasses responsible consumption, renewable energy adoption, water conservation, waste management, sustainable packaging, responsible sourcing, and biodiversity preservation.
Shoprite achieves 91-percent surge in renewable energy usage, aims for emissions cut
Shoprite has significantly ramped up its use of renewable energy, with consumption shooting up by 91 percent in the past year. This push towards renewables has played a key role in cutting emissions, in line with the company’s sustainability objectives.
The company has also focused on curbing greenhouse gas emissions in its logistics operations. By deploying advanced Euro 5 compliant trucks and installing solar PV panels on trailer roofs, Shoprite aims to enhance fuel efficiency and decrease emissions during transportation.
To address water security concerns, Shoprite has installed a centralized system featuring smart electricity and water meters. This system effectively monitors usage, detects leaks, ensures usage accuracy, and manages consumption efficiently.
Despite its sustainability drive, Shoprite has shown strong financial resilience, posting robust half-year sales growth. With a significant funding injection of $64 million (R1.2 billion) from Standard Bank, the company plans to bolster its supply chain infrastructure.
