Simera Sense, a satellite technology firm under the Simera Group led by South African businessman Johann Du Toit, has successfully concluded a growth investment round, securing a total of €13.5 million ($14.75 million).

The funding, led by NewSpace Capital and Knife Capital, aims to enhance production capabilities as the company gears up for an expansion into Europe while maintaining its primary production facility in Southern Africa.

Established in 2018 by South African entrepreneur Johann Du Toit, Simera Sense stands out for its high-resolution cameras tailored for the global small satellite sector. This industry is set to hit $12.55 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $20.73 billion by 2029. These cameras serve diverse sectors like environmental monitoring, urban planning, and agriculture.

A significant upcoming move for Simera Sense is its plan to introduce cutting-edge on-board data processing capabilities integrated into its camera control electronics. This innovation aims to transform the industry by overcoming bandwidth constraints and communication hurdles tied to ground-based data processing.

Following a successful seed funding round in 2018 that raised €1.2 million ($1.3 million), the recent funding round puts Simera Sense in a strong position to expand its product range, speed up delivery schedules, and push forward with its innovative on-board data processing solutions.

Du Toit expressed his excitement about the funding, stating, “Satellite imagery plays a pivotal role in addressing terrestrial challenges, and the robust growth witnessed in the Earth observation and broader space markets underscores its significance. This is an incredibly exciting juncture for our company.”

Currently capable of producing around 25 payloads annually alongside 30–40 engineering and test models, Simera Sense aims to double its development team over the next two years. This expansion will enable closer collaboration with European material suppliers and product development partners, supporting the goal of increasing output to 200 payloads annually across various configurations.
