MTN Group, Africa’s largest telecom service provider, led by Zimbabwean senior executive Ralph Mupita, has unveiled plans to invest $215 million in telecom infrastructure in the Republic of Benin over the next three years.

The investment marks a pivotal step toward integrating cutting-edge technology to deliver robust connectivity solutions. The ambitious commitment was revealed during a leadership visit to Cotonou, the largest city in Benin, underscoring the telecom group’s dedication to pioneering digital solutions for the advancement of the African continent. 

The highlight of the visit was a meeting with Beninese President Patrice Talon, attended by MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita, MTN Benin Chairman Amadou Raimi, Senior Vice President for Markets Ebenezer Asante, MTN Benin CEO Uche Ofodile, and MTN Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer Nompilo Morafo.

As part of its comprehensive infrastructure investment in Benin, MTN Group will not only enhance telecom capabilities but also construct a state-of-the-art office for its subsidiary, MTN Benin. This move aligns with MTN’s commitment to fostering digital innovation and contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.

Mupita, at the forefront of MTN Group’s success, expressed gratitude for the warm reception in Benin saying: “MTN works to be a force for good in our markets, giving Africans hope, dignity and opportunity… We are grateful for the warm reception received in Benin, where we have trialled 5G services and see opportunities to progress this.”

Mupita outlined the company’s dedication to providing hope, dignity, and opportunities for Africans, highlighting their commitment to the development and upskilling of the Beninese youth. He also indicated a desire to collaborate with the government and other stakeholders in these efforts.

Elevating connectivity: Mupita’s visionary leadership in MTN’s expansion beyond voice and data

Under Mupita’s leadership, MTN Group has achieved remarkable success, now serving more than 289 million customers across 22 countries. The telecom giant’s diverse portfolio includes services ranging from fintech and digital solutions to enterprise, wholesale, and API offerings. 

Mupita’s vision has propelled MTN through a period of expansion, solidifying its position as a leading force in Africa’s digital transformation. The success is not limited to the company alone. Mupita’s minority 0.043-percent stake in MTN, now valued at R78.2 million ($4.2 million), positions him among Southern Africa’s most affluent CEOs.

The $215-million infrastructure investment in Benin follows MTN Group’s recent engagement with prominent satellite services providers, including Elon Musk’s Starlink, showcasing the company’s commitment to expanding its reach into underserved areas across Africa.

MTN is also set to conduct direct-to-cell trials with Lynk Global in South Africa and Ghana, demonstrating a multifaceted approach to ensuring seamless connectivity in regions with limited infrastructure.
