Early Life

Born on Oct. 4, 1957, in Queens, New York, Simmons grew up in a middle-class family. Simmons’ entrepreneurial journey began in the streets of New York, where he learned the basics of running a business. He sold drugs and was a number runner. This experience taught him the mindset of being independent and responsible for his profit. He then went to college for three years, and while he was there, he started promoting hip-hop parties. This was the beginning of his legitimate entrepreneurial journey.

Def Jam Recordings

His entrepreneurial journey began in the 1980s when he co-founded Def Jam Recordings with Rick Rubin. This venture was pivotal, not only in Simmons’ career but also in the evolution of hip-hop. The label released American rapper LL Cool J’s hip-hop single ‘I Need a Beat’ and American hip-hop band “Beastie Boys” track “Rock Hard.” Under Simmons’ leadership, Def Jam signed acts including the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, DMX, and Kanye West. The label’s success was astronomical, becoming a multi-million-dollar entity and fundamentally changing the music industry. In 1999, Simmons sold his shares in Def Jam to Universal Music Group for $120 million

Expansion into Clothing with Phat Farm

Simmons expanded his portfolio in the 1990s with the launch of Phat Farm, a clothing line that blended urban fashion with mainstream appeal. This venture was particularly notable for its impact on the fashion industry, as it merged hip-hop culture with high fashion. Phat Farm quickly grew into a lucrative business, reportedly earning over $100 million in annual revenue at its peak. He later sold Phat Farm for $114 million in 2004.

Media, Entertainment and Other Ventures

Simmons’ success with Def Jam and Phat Farm set the stage for further diversification. He established himself in media and entertainment with ventures like Def Comedy Jam and Def Poetry Jam on HBO. He also produced the feature film “Krush Groove” in 1985. These platforms not only generated significant revenue but also provided a stage for new and established talent, further solidifying Simmons’ influence in entertainment.  In addition, he launched a men’s clothing line for Macy’s called Russell Simmons Argyle Culture and a less expensive line sold exclusively at Wal-Mart.

Rush Communications

Simmons heads up Rush Communications, a holding company for his financial, media, and fashion businesses. The company ventured into film production, sportswear, and advertising. It also controls a production company for film, another for television, a management company, a magazine, and an advertising agency, and owns a large portion of the hip-hop-focused website, Global Grind.

Russell Simmons is renowned for his philanthropic work. He co-founded the “Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation” with his brothers in 1995, which provides art education and support to under-serviced youth. He also supports PETA, protesting against the treatment of chickens at KFC. Simmons leads the “Foundation for Ethnic Understanding”, encouraging greater communication between Jews and Muslims. His philanthropic efforts extend to various other charities, demonstrating his commitment to societal betterment.
