Northern Sky Research (NSR), a global provider of satellite and space market research and consulting services, has been acquired by Datatec, a multinational technology group led by South African businessman Jens Montanana.

The acquisition of NSR by Analysys Mason, the world’s leading management consultancy focused on telecoms, media, and technology, and Datatec’s operating subsidiary, was completed for an undisclosed fee and is in line with the group’s strategic expansion plans.

Montanana, Analysys Mason’s CEO, stated that the combination of NSR’s industry-leading knowledge and expertise and Analysys Mason’s strong international market position in the TMT sector will broaden Analysys Mason’s services to new and existing clients worldwide.

“Because 5G and satellite technologies are rapidly converging, with disruptive effects on investment models,” he said. “The acquisition of NSR, with its unrivaled satellite and space expertise, is therefore very timely and places Analysys Mason in a unique position to advise its clients on these important developments.”

Datatec is a South African-based ICT solutions and services company that operates in over 50 countries across North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific.

Under the leadership of Montanana, who controls a significant 11.98-percent stake in the technology group, the group provides software services and cloud-computing solutions such as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS).

Datatec reported a profit of $5.7 million and revenue of $4.11 billion at the end of 2021, a 2.5-percent decrease from the restated revenue of $4.21 billion reported the previous year.

As of press time on May 5, shares in the multinational technology group were trading at R38.99 per share, 65 basis points higher than its opening price on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, giving the company a R8.4 billion ($523.1 million) market capitalization on the local exchange.

Jens Montanana’s 11.98-percent stake in Datatec is currently valued at R1.0 billion ($63 million), making him one of the wealthiest investors on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
