Diageo Plc, a British multinational beverage group, has appointed Kenyan executive John Musunga as CEO of Guinness Nigeria Plc, a Nigerian-based brewer and spirit maker that operates as a subsidiary of Diageo.

The board is optimistic that Musunga’s invaluable experience and passion for developing strong talent and driving overall business transformation through sustainable growth and the delivery of value to stakeholders will further strengthen the company’s leadership.

According to a press release published on the Nigerian Exchange during trading hours, his appointment as the CEO of Guinness Nigeria, which will take effect on Nov. 1, follows the resignation of Baker Magunda, who has been a key player in the group for more than 23 years.

Musunga, the current managing director of Kenya Breweries Limited, a subsidiary of East African Breweries Limited, brings to the board extensive experience in business transformation in the consumer goods industry.

The Kenyan executive joined Diageo in March 2021. He has held commercial, sales, and marketing leadership roles at GlaxoSmithKline Plc in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Eastern Europe.

The board is confident that Musunga’s invaluable experience and passion for developing strong talent and driving overall business transformation through sustainable growth and the delivery of value to stakeholders will further strengthen the company’s leadership.

Musunga’s appointment as CEO of Guinness Nigeria makes him the second Kenyan executive to be appointed to a major corporate position outside of Kenya in the last month.

Earlier this month, the board of Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, a pan-African banking conglomerate, announced the appointment of Jeremy Awori as CEO.

His appointment comes after Absa Bank Kenya announced Awori’s resignation as managing director and CEO on Thurs., Sept. 8, after nearly ten years of outstanding leadership, service, and contribution.
