Saki Macozoma, a prominent South African businessman and current chair of Vodacom South Africa, has been appointed as an independent non-executive director of Mondi Plc, a multinational packaging and paper group based in the United Kingdom.

Macozoma, the first Black managing director of Transnet, the state-owned company that runs South Africa’s ports, railways and South African Airways, will join Mondi Plc as an independent non-executive director on May 6.

The South African businessman is expected to join the multinational packaging and paper group’s audit and nominations committees.

According to Philip Yea, chairman of the board of Mondi, Macozoma’s appointment to the board is in line with efforts to broaden the board’s diversity and bring in new managerial perspectives.

“He has a strong track record as a chair and non-executive director across a number of listed and private entities and brings significant experience from a range of industries. Saki also brings extensive insight into the African business environment,” he added.

Saki Macozoma, Nelson Mandela’s fellow political prisoner, is one of South Africa’s most prominent business figures. He is the current chairman of Safika Holdings, a major South African investment holding company founded in 1995.

The leading businessman is also the chairman of Tshipi e Ntle and Ntsimbintle Mining, as well as a director of Volkswagen South Africa. He previously served as the chair of MTN Group Limited and as a non-executive director of Standard Bank Group Limited, Liberty Holdings and Murray and Roberts Holdings Limited.

In South Africa, Saki contributes significantly to civil society in addition to his business interests. He is an advisor to the Eastern Cape Premier, the chairman of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, and a member of the Rhodes University Board of Governors.
