The Ghanaian government has recognized Joseph Saw Agyepong of Jospong Group of Companies (JGC) as the “CEO of the Decade” in the environmental and sanitation sector.
The awards ceremony took place during the fifth edition of Ghana’s CEO Summit, themed, “Digital Transformation: Powering Business and Government Reset for a Post-Pandemic Economic Resilience. A Public-Private Sector Dialogue.”
The event took place in Accra, where Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia officially presented the award to Agyepong, Ghana Web reported.
This follows JGC’s recent moves to help the country effectively manage waste, maintain a healthy environment and guarantee effective waste management.
In the first week of May, JGC unveiled the new GH¢ 5-million ($864, 324) Environmental Sanitation Research Fund (ESRF), which will provide grants to public universities for environmental sanitation research in Ghana.
The initiative will offer funding and execution opportunities for practical and sustainable environmental sanitation research solutions. It will also support public universities to develop home-grown research-driven mechanisms to address the challenges impeding effective waste management in the West African state.
Last week, JGC signed a $70-million memorandum of understanding with the U.S. McDavid Green Solutions (MDGS/MDPower LLC) to build waste-to-energy plants throughout Ghana. According to the company, if implemented, the plants will help Ghana sustainably manage 100 percent of its various waste streams.
Agyepong is one of Ghana’s wealthiest men with a net worth of $600 million, as estimated by GH Students.
JGC has more than 32 subsidiaries functioning in 11 sectors. The group also partners with 16 Chinese, eight Indian and five European companies in Ghana, generating a trade volume of $4.36 billion as of 2013.
