by Omokolade Ajayi

The board of directors of Zimbabwe’s leading telecommunications provider, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, has announced the appointment of Elizabeth Tanya Masiyiwa to the board of the Harare-based telecom company.

Masiyiwa, a senior executive, social entrepreneur and philanthropist, is one of the six children of Strive Masiyiwa, Zimbabwe’s richest man and one of the eighteen billionaires of African descent.

Strive Masiyiwa built Econet Wireless Zimbabwe into a billion-dollar business.

Her appointment comes nearly a month after Strive Masiyiwa announced his retirement as chairman and director of Econet Wireless Zimbabwe Limited, bringing his governance role in the telecom company to a close as he refocuses his efforts on philanthropic efforts through the Gates Foundation.

Elizabeth Masiyiwa previously served on several boards, including the Higherlife Foundation, where she is the head of design and innovation, and the Harvard University Leadership Council for the Center of African Studies.

She holds a number of leadership positions in both local and international organizations.

The board of directors of the leading telecom company believes her addition to the board will bring a wealth of experience, as she has worked in various organizations, spearheading investment and funding programs, as well as human capital development.

Under her father’s leadership, Econet has grown into the market leader, as well as one of Zimbabwe’s largest and most profitable enterprises, with more than 12.4 million connected customers over the past 20 years.

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe shares were worth ZWL136.39 ($0.41) on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange as of press time on April 7, giving the telecom company a ZWL358-billion ($1.1 billion) valuation.
