U.S. multinational fast food chain Burger King has launched its first outlet in Nigeria, as the hamburger maker seeks out growth opportunities to accelerate its global expansion.

By entering Africa’s largest economy, Burger King hopes to leverage growth opportunities on the Nigerian market to better compete with McDonald’s on the continent.

Antoine Zammarieh, the Burger King franchisee in Nigeria and managing director of Allied Food and Confectionary Services Limited, disclosed in a post that the leading fast food chain has now opened its first outlet in Ajose Adeogun in Victoria Island, Lagos, in line with its target to launch operations in the country in Q4 2021.

Earlier this year when the franchise signed a development agreement for the Nigerian market, Zammarieh statd that the Burger King will kick off operations between September and November 2021 after concluding agreements with local suppliers and setting up a quality control unit.

Burger King is a U.S. multinational fast food chain headquartered in Florida.

It is one of many international companies drawn to Africa thanks to its appealing demographics. The UN projects that the world’s 10 fastest-growing cities by 2035 will be on the continent.

With a median age of 19, Africa’s population is expected to double to more than 2 billion by 2050, while the population of Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, will likely top 400 million.

Burger King will compete for market share with fast food chains like Dominos Pizza, Krispy Kreme, KFC and Chicken Republic (pieXpress).
