Tanzanian med-tech tycoon Dilan Ellegala’s AfiyaSasa Africa to sell controlling stake to U.S.-based Xcelerate Inc.

Tanzanian med-tech startup AfiyaSasa Africa (ASA) is on course to finalize a deal with the U.S.-based medical technology services provider, Xcelerate Inc., which will see it cede a controlling stake to the company.

ASA is a virtual health company founded by Tanzanian world-renowned spinal surgery specialist Dilan Ellegala. It helps patients in developing countries meet their medical needs by interacting with physicians through its platform.

The ASA platform incorporates AI and AR developed by AdviNOW to connect individuals living in remote areas with limited medical infrastructure and few medical professionals.

The membership interest purchase agreement will see ASA sell a controlling 51-percent stake in its platform to the U.S. company.

The platform, which can be accessed by patients on their mobiles, tablets and computers, allows licensed physicians and other medical personnel to virtually conduct checkups and determine the most appropriate path of care. It is also equipped with facial recognition and storage capability to identify return patients.

Through sets of questions and answers that are dynamically integrated with its proprietary AI, the platform allows measurements to be taken using medical devices connected to a smartphone, tablet or computer, thus bringing the telemedicine virtual appointment to the next level.

Xcelerate CEO Michael O’Shea said Xcelerate’s move aligns with its expansion strategy, which has been at the forefront of its plans since Ellegala joined its advisory board in 2021.
