Nigerian billionaire Abdul Samad Rabiu has reportedly donated N1 billion ($2.43 million) to Nnamdi Azikiwe University to facilitate the construction of an international students center.

The donation was made through his Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative (ASRi), the philanthropic arm of BUA Group, as part of its 2021 tertiary education grants scheme.

Receiving the grant at a private event on the university premises on Oct. 7, Vice Chancellor, Professor Charles Okechukwu Esimone thanked Rabiu for his generosity and promised that upon completion the students center will be one of the best of its kind in Nigeria.

Rabiu, the chairman of BUA Group, was represented at the event by Dr. Aliyu Idi Hung, a former Nigerian health minister, who said Rabiu’s donation was borne out of a genuine desire to contribute his quota to the growth and development of Nigeria’s education sector.

“The chairman has a commitment of setting aside $100 million annually, of which $50 million is set aside specifically for Nigeria and the remaining $50 million for the rest of Africa. In part of what we have done so far, this is the last lap of the university intervention of N1billion development grant to one institution in each geographical zone of the country,” Dr. Hing said.

Construction work on the student center is expected to commence in a couple of months.

Rabiu, one of Nigeria’s wealthiest men, has emerged as one of Africa’s biggest philanthropists in the sphere of education in recent months.

In July, he donated $2.43 million to the University of Benin and, in August, he donated $4.8 million to the government to construct the University College of Medical Sciences in Sokoto.

He has made similar gifts to the University of Maiduguri, University of Ilorin, University of Ibadan, and Ahmadu Bello University Zaria over the past few months.
