The Nigerian subsidiary of Africa’s largest telecom company, MTN, has renewed its operating license with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The license had expired on Aug. 31.
Ernest Ndukwe is the chairman of MTN Nigeria Communications. He was previously the chairman of the NCC.
MTN Nigeria said its Unified Access Service (UAS) license and spectrum license for wireless local loop in the 900MHz and 1800MHz band have been renewed, Technext reported.
The UAS license permits the company to provide a broad range of services under a single license and to build, operate and utilize an international communications gateway among many other benefits.
“Renewing our licenses for another 10 years is very important to our business and enables us to continue to provide services to ensure the benefits of a modern connected life for our people,” MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola said.
According to Technext, the NCC received from the South African-headquartered company N71.6 billion ($4.8 billion) for the spectrum license and N374.6 million ($25.11 million) for the UAS license for the period from Sept. 1, 2021 to Aug. 31, 2031.
A few weeks ago, MTN Nigeria announced plans to invest N600 billion ($1.46 billion) in expanding its network infrastructure across Nigeria over the next three years.
The renewal of the licenses allows Nigeria’s largest telecom operator to implement those plans.
