Abdul Samad Rabiu’s ASRi donates $6 million to build oncology center in Ilorin

The Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative (ASRi) has announced a N2.5-billion ($6 million) donation to the Kwara State government to construct the most extensive oncology and diagnostics center in West Africa.

The ASRi Oncology and Diagnosis Center will be a standalone facility dedicated to oncology diagnosis, research and treatment, which will go a long way in bridging the gap in cancer research, diagnosis and treatment in West Africa.

According to ASRi, the billionaire received the design for the center from Kwara State Governor Abdul Rahman Abdul Razaq and construction will commence on-site before the end of August.

In a statement, BUA Group Executive Director Kabiru Rabiu said he appreciated the efforts made by the governor and his team to kickstart the project in line with ASRi’s mutual accountability framework.

“We are moving to site as early as August and the chairman, Abdul Samad Rabiu, has mandated that the oncology center must be completed before the end of 2022,” he added.

He further congratulated the governor on the achievements of his administration in the healthcare, infrastructure and education sectors. “We are proud to partner serious and committed governments to make interventions and sustainable impact in healthcare and development for the benefit of the people,” Kabiru Rabiu said.

In turn, the governor noted the center’s importance for the state. “This oncology and diagnosis center is a legacy project that will last beyond all of us and for years to come, this would be a priority project which will anchor our health care system,” he said.

ASRi is the philanthropic arm of BUA Group, founded by billionaire businessman Abdul Samad Rabiu. It is an annual $100-million Africa fund for social development and renewal. It was established in March to provide sustainable, impact-based homegrown solutions to developmental issues in health, education and social development in Africa.
