Orascom Construction consortium powers ahead with Egypt’s largest wind farm expansion

Key Points

  • Orascom Construction launches 306 MW at Ras Ghareb wind farm, surpassing the target by 56 MW, four months ahead of schedule.
  • The wind farm, part of a 650 MW project, powers 1 million homes and reduces 1.3 million tons of carbon emissions annually.
  • By Q3 2025, Orascom aims to complete the largest operational wind farm in the Middle East and Africa, expanding Egypt’s renewable energy capacity.

Orascom Construction, controlled by Egypt's wealthiest family, the Sawiris family, has launched commercial operations for 306 MW at the newly expanded Ras Ghareb wind farm, four months ahead of schedule. This achievement surpasses the original target by an additional 56 MW, marking a significant step in the company's renewable energy efforts.

The 650 MW wind farm, developed under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) scheme, is a collaborative project supported by leading global and regional institutions, including the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, Société Générale, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The completed phase now powers over 1 million homes and reduces carbon emissions by 1.3 million tons annually.

Orascom powers Egypt’s renewable future

By Q3 2025, the project, which began over two years ago, is expected to become the largest operational wind farm in the Middle East and Africa. With 306 MW already operational, the remaining capacity will be connected to the grid, further solidifying Orascom Construction’s commitment to advancing Egypt's renewable energy objectives.

As part of the Red Sea Wind Energy consortium, alongside partners ENGIE, Toyota Tsusho Corporation, and Eurus Energy, Orascom has expanded its role in Egypt’s renewable energy sector. The consortium’s combined efforts have increased Egypt’s total wind power capacity to 912.5 MW, cementing Orascom’s leadership in sustainable energy solutions for the region.

Driving Egypt’s renewable energy future

Orascom Construction PLC, a leading engineering and construction firm founded in 1976 by the late Onsi Sawiris, continues to drive Egypt's renewable energy transformation across the Middle East, Africa, and the U.S.

Nassef Sawiris, Egypt's wealthiest individual, owns a 36.52 percent stake in Orascom Construction, contributing to the company’s prominence in green technology.

As part of the Red Sea Wind Energy consortium with ENGIE, Toyota Tsusho, and Eurus Energy, Orascom has played a pivotal role in sustainably addressing Egypt’s growing energy needs through its expertise in Build-Own-Operate (BOO) schemes and advanced green technology.
