Oriental Weavers, a leading global manufacturer of carpets and textiles led by Egyptian businesswoman Yasmine Mohamed Khamis and her siblings, has unveiled an ambitious expansion of its state-of-the-art industrial wastewater treatment plant at its flagship spinning factory—a milestone in its sustainability journey.

The facility, which operates with four consecutive treatment stages, is capable of processing up to 1,250 cubic meters of wastewater per day. This expansion reflects the company's ongoing efforts to enhance its environmental performance and sustainability initiatives.

Commitment to sustainable practices

This development is part of Oriental Weavers' broader strategy to reduce its environmental impact while complying with both local and international environmental standards. It underscores the company’s dedication to sustainable industrial practices, emphasizing the growing importance of corporate responsibility in today’s world.

Rabab Manee, the Head of Sustainability and Climate Change at Oriental Weavers, explained that the plant, covering 450 square meters, represents an investment of over EGP24 million ($0.47 million). This significant investment not only addresses industrial wastewater treatment but also supports the company’s long-term environmental objectives.

Yasmine Khamis, Chair of Oriental Weavers, highlighted the importance of the wastewater treatment plant as a pivotal step in the company’s mission to minimize its environmental impact. “This plant is integral to our strategy of mitigating industrial wastewater discharge and preserving the environment. For us, sustainable growth is not just about expanding production but also about being responsible corporate citizens,” Khamis said.

Founded in 1979 and publicly listed on the Egyptian Exchange (EGX) since 1997, Oriental Weavers has grown into a leading player in the global carpet, rug, and textile market. With production facilities in three countries and a presence in approximately 150 countries, the company is renowned for its excellence in machine-woven textiles.

Under Yasmine Khamis, the company has remained competitive by prioritizing sustainability and social impact. In 2024, Oriental Weavers made notable investments in Egypt’s education sector to help bridge the skills gap. The company's environmental initiatives include the use of renewable energy, improved energy efficiency, advanced water treatment, and industrial waste recycling, demonstrating its commitment to both economic and environmental development.

In a reflection of its global presence, Oriental Weavers reported a 44 percent year-on-year revenue increase for Q3 2024, reaching EGP6.42 billion ($127 million). With international markets contributing 69 percent of total revenues, the company continues to solidify its position as a leader in textile manufacturing worldwide.
