Sakunda Holdings, led by Zimbabwean businessman Kuda Tagwirei, has announced a $1.5 million annual sponsorship deal for Scottland Football Club. This five-year agreement, valued at $7.5 million, is the largest sponsorship ever for a Premier Soccer League (PSL) team and promises to propel the newly promoted club to new heights.
The sponsorship will fund playing, training, and travel kits, while also supporting the club’s off-field growth. Additionally, Sakunda Holdings will aid Scottland in constructing a 15,000-seat stadium in Mabvuku, providing the club with modern infrastructure to compete at the highest level.
Developing infrastructure and global exposure
As part of the infrastructure project, Scottland FC officials will tour three internationally mechanized stadiums to help guide the construction of their new facility. The sponsorship also includes luxury vehicles for the club’s coach and captain, mirroring Sakunda’s support for Dynamos and Highlanders football teams.
Tagwirei, unveiling the sponsorship on Dec. 19, emphasized the need for Scottland to operate like a business while valuing its fans and players.
“We are committed to helping Scottland achieve success as they start their journey in the Premier Soccer League,” Tagwirei said. “We hope to see you becoming champions sooner rather than later.”
Strengthening the team and empowering youth
Scottland FC President Pedzai “Scott” Sakupwanya expressed gratitude for the transformative sponsorship.
“This means a great deal because Scottland is not just focused on success on the field but also off the field,” Sakupwanya said. “With this sponsorship, the acquisition of players and coaches will be much easier, ensuring the highest caliber for our team.”
The financial backing will attract top-tier talent and support youth development initiatives, setting the foundation for sustained success in Zimbabwean football.
A broader vision for Zimbabwean sport
This sponsorship aligns with Sakunda Holdings’ commitment to advancing Zimbabwean sports and fostering community development. The company already provides $1 million annually to Dynamos and Highlanders FC, underscoring its dedication to nurturing talent and strengthening the country’s football sector.
Sakunda Holdings’ contributions extend beyond sports. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company donated $170 million for vaccine procurement, exemplifying its role as a key player in national development.
By supporting Scottland FC, Tagwirei reinforces his vision of using football as a catalyst for progress, empowering communities, and elevating Zimbabwe’s sporting legacy.
