From a humble beginning in Mohlakeng, Gauteng, one of South Africa’s predominantly Black communities, Mpumi Madisa has risen to prominence as a trailblazing business leader. In 2020, she made history as the first Black woman to lead a top-40 company on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), cementing her role as a pioneer in South Africa’s corporate world.

As CEO of Bidvest Group—a leading services, trading, and distribution conglomerate—the 44-year-old business executive oversees nearly 130,000 employees, driving operational excellence, transformative change, and delivering impressive shareholder value. From Hollard Insurance to leadership

Armed with degrees in economics, mathematics, and finance from Wits University, Madisa began her career at Hollard Insurance before joining Bidvest in 2003. Her rise through the ranks was swift, fueled by her leadership potential and dedication.

She initially made her mark at Prestige, a Bidvest subsidiary specializing in cleaning services, where she excelled as client relations manager and later corporate affairs director.

Her passion for transformation was further demonstrated during her tenure as Chief Director of Transformation at the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, where she advanced opportunities for women in executive roles.

Madisa leads Bidvest to record profits

Madisa’s appointment as Bidvest CEO on October 1, 2020, was a landmark moment for South Africa’s corporate landscape. Officially assuming the role in July 2020, she became the first Black woman to lead a top-40 JSE-listed company.

Her visionary leadership has not only solidified Bidvest's position as one of South Africa's largest conglomerates but also inspired a new era of gender and racial transformation in the country’s boardrooms.

Under her leadership, Bidvest has achieved remarkable financial success. The group’s market capitalization soared to R93.84 billion ($5.2 billion), supported by a turnaround from a R186.9 million ($10.31 million) loss in 2020 to a R6.77 billion ($373.77 million) net profit for the fiscal year ending June 2024.

Total revenue rose from R76.54 billion ($4.22 billion) in June 2020 to R122.62 billion ($6.77 billion) in June 2024. Additionally, total assets grew from R90.9 billion ($5.02 billion) to R112.58 billion ($6.22 billion), reflecting Madisa’s strategic acumen and focus on operational resilience.

Diversity drives Madisa’s leadership impact

Mpumi Madisa's achievements have been impressive both personally and professionally. In 2023, she earned a compensation package of R66.95 million ($3.7 million), reflecting a 48.27 percent increase from the previous year. She also holds 147,420 shares in Bidvest, valued at R40.53 million ($2.24 million), showcasing her deep financial connection to the company.

Beyond her financial success, Madisa is a strong advocate for diversity and inclusivity in corporate South Africa. She uses her platform to champion gender and racial equity, furthering her impact across 16 Bidvest subsidiary boards. This broad influence highlights her pivotal role in shaping the group’s strategic direction and corporate culture.
