- Springfield Exploration and Production completes successful Afina well appraisal.
- Afina-1x well shows promising reservoir productivity with 4,500 bopd flow rate.
- Mini-DST results indicate potential of 12,000 boepd from Turonian gas/condensate.
Springfield Exploration and Production (E&P) Limited, under the leadership of CEO Kevin Okyere, alongside its partners Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and GNPC EXPLORCO, has completed a successful appraisal of the Afina discovery with the re-entry of the Afina-1X well. Originally drilled in 2019, the well, located at a water depth of 1,030 meters, reached a total depth of 4,085 meters, encountering light oil with a gross thickness of 65 meters and 50 meters of net oil pay in high-quality Cenomanian sandstones.
Well test confirms high production potential
A secondary target drilled at the edge of the structure, within Turonian-age sands, encountered 10 meters of hydrocarbon-bearing sands containing gas/condensate. The results of the well test have confirmed the reservoir’s productive capacity, with a Drill Stem Test (DST) on the Cenomanian sandstone achieving a maximum flow rate of 4,500 barrels of oil per day (bopd), surpassing pre-test expectations and confirming strong reservoir productivity.
Pressure transient analysis revealed that the reservoir has experienced some depletion since 2019, indicating a drop in pressure due to production. A mini-DST on the Turonian sandstone confirmed the presence of gas/condensate, with an estimated flow potential of up to 12,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd).
Springfield’s historic achievements and future potential
CEO Kevin Okyere expressed his satisfaction with the results, stating, "We are extremely happy with the results of the appraisal programme, which has further confirmed our geological, geophysical, and reservoir models, and demonstrated our operational capacity." He highlighted that although the Afina-1X is a vertical well, future horizontal drilling or other completion techniques could significantly enhance production rates, offering new commercial development opportunities for both the Cenomanian and Turonian reservoirs.
Okyere also praised the team’s commitment to safely executing the test, thanking the Springfield team, Northern Ocean’s Deepsea Bollsta crew, and all service partners for completing the appraisal on schedule and without incident.
This successful well test is part of Springfield’s broader strategy to finalize the unitization of the Afina and Sankofa oil fields, in collaboration with GNPC and GNPC EXPLORCO. Springfield continues to make history as the first independent Ghanaian and African energy company to operate a deep-water asset and discover hydrocarbons in the region.
