Springfield Group, the energy conglomerate founded and led by Ghanaian businessman Kevin Okyere, has secured a contract with Northern Ocean Limited (NOL) to deploy the Deepsea Bollsta rig for the appraisal of the Afina-1x well.

Located in the West Cape Three Points Block 2 (WCTP-2), deep offshore Ghana, the Afina-1x well is pivotal to the company’s long-term oil production strategy. This move was made through Springfield’s oil exploration arm, Springfield Exploration & Production (E&P).

In collaboration with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and GNPC Explorco, Springfield’s latest initiative is a major step toward finalizing the unitization of the Afina and Sankofa oil fields.

This partnership underscores the group’s commitment to driving Ghana’s offshore oil output, with the ultimate goal of bringing significant value to both the Ghanaian government and the various stakeholders involved in the project.

Springfield targets historic offshore milestone

The appraisal work using the Deepsea Bollsta rig is scheduled to commence in October 2024. Alongside Northern Ocean, Springfield has engaged a host of blue-chip service companies, both local and international, to support operations.

The success of this appraisal would mark a historic milestone for Springfield Group, positioning it as the first independent African producer operating in deepwater offshore.

Kevin Okyere, Chief Executive Officer of Springfield, expressed optimism about the campaign's broader significance. “I hope our tenacity and persistence inspire Ghanaians and the youth across Africa to dream big and achieve whatever they set their minds to,” Okyere said.

He added, “Together with GNPC and GNPC Explorco, we are excited to work with Northern Ocean on this historic drilling campaign, setting a precedent for independent African companies in deepwater operations.”

Springfield Group’s leading role in Ghana’s energy sector

Springfield Group, led by Kevin Okyere, is the first fully Ghanaian-owned company with a majority stake in an oil and gas asset. The group plays a key role in Ghana’s oil industry, spanning exploration, production, transport, storage, and trading of hydrocarbons.

Okyere, who started in construction and telecoms, founded Springfield Energy in 2008 to tap into Ghana’s emerging oil sector. Since then, Springfield has expanded into both upstream and downstream operations.

Over 15 years, Okyere has built Springfield into a major force in Ghana’s energy sector. Its latest project with the Deepsea Bollsta rig underscores its ambitions in offshore oil production.
