On Monday, renowned Nigerian businessman and philanthropist Theophilus Danjuma made a significant contribution of N1 billion ($605,460) through his charity, the Theophilus Danjuma Foundation. The donation is intended to provide relief and support to victims of the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri, which has left many displaced and struggling to rebuild their lives.
In his stead, Danjuma’s daughter, Gloria Danjuma, along with the CEO of the TY Danjuma Foundation, presented the donation to Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum. Before handing over the check, Gloria conveyed her father’s heartfelt condolences to the people of Borno, explaining that Danjuma was unable to attend due to personal challenges.
"I am here today as a representative of Gen. TY Danjuma, alongside the CEO of the foundation. My father has sent his deepest sympathies to you, the council members, and the people of Borno State,” she stated. “Along with this message, he has also asked me to present a donation of N1 billion ($605,460) to support the victims of the flood disaster. Please accept his sincere condolences.”
Danjuma's enduring legacy of generosity across Nigeria
In response, Governor Zulum expressed profound gratitude on behalf of the state. He emphasized the critical role that the donation will play in addressing the destruction caused by the flooding, which claimed lives and inflicted significant property damage.
“I want to begin by appreciating the representatives of our father, led by our daughter, Gloria. On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, I extend our heartfelt thanks to this delegation,” the governor remarked.
Governor Zulum also highlighted the continued support from the TY Danjuma Foundation over the years, recalling previous efforts such as the rehabilitation of 20 public institutions in Dikwa that had been destroyed by Boko Haram, as well as the reconstruction of 10 public schools and healthcare centers in Bama.
Philanthropy beyond Borno State
Theophilus Danjuma's philanthropic reach extends well beyond Borno State. In 2023, he made a notable donation of $1.36 million to the College of Medicine at the University of Ibadan (CoMUI) for the construction of a new block in the school's hostel. That same year, Danjuma funded the construction of a 500-capacity female hostel at the University of Benin in honor of his wife, Daisy Danjuma.
Through these acts of generosity, Danjuma has consistently demonstrated his commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians and contributing to the country’s development. Beyond his success as a business magnate, Danjuma continues to solidify his legacy as a champion of philanthropy, with a particular focus on education, healthcare, and disaster relief.
