South African billionaire Nicky Oppenheimer, the second-richest individual in the country, has seen his fortune swell by over $1.4 billion so far in 2024, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Oppenheimer’s net worth has risen from $9.85 billion at the start of the year to $11.3 billion, solidifying his place among the world’s wealthiest individuals.

The $1.43 billion increase in his wealth makes Oppenheimer one of only two African billionaires to have gained more than $1 billion this year. Natie Kirsh, whose net worth has surged by $1.8 billion, is the other African billionaire to see such significant wealth growth this year.

Oppenheimer’s investment strategy pays off

Oppenheimer’s wealth gains are largely attributed to his diverse portfolio of private investments, which are primarily managed through his London-based investment firm, Stockdale Street, and Johannesburg’s Tana Africa Capital.

These investment vehicles hold stakes in a wide range of industries, allowing the family to expand its influence across both African and global markets.

In addition to his investment success, Nicky Oppenheimer’s family office, Oppenheimer Generations, continues to play a key role in managing the family’s business interests globally.

Established with his son Jonathan, Oppenheimer Generations has offices in Johannesburg and Singapore, highlighting ambitions to bridge business opportunities between Africa and Asia.

Nicky Oppenheimer boosts conservation and jobs in Africa

Beyond business, Nicky Oppenheimer is widely recognized for his conservation efforts.

Alongside his son, Jonathan Oppenheimer, he co-owns Tswalu Kalahari, South Africa’s largest private game reserve, which covers 110,000 hectares and serves as a sanctuary for endangered species and a key site for biodiversity conservation.

The Oppenheimers have also contributed significantly to the economic and environmental preservation of Zimbabwe through their ownership of the 65,000-hectare Shangani Ranch.
