Dangote Cement Plc, the cement giant majority owned by Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote, has launched an internship program designed to provide Nigerian students with essential industry experience. This initiative, part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, aims to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application.

During the induction ceremony for the first cohort of interns from Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, Tunde Mabogunje, Lagos Regional Sales Director of Dangote Cement, highlighted the program’s objective. “This initiative is designed to provide top-performing engineering students with hands-on experience that complements their academic studies,” Mabogunje said. “Our goal is to develop well-rounded engineers capable of driving innovation in the industry.”

Pilot phase in Lagos, Kano

The pilot phase of the program, currently operational in Lagos and Kano States, includes 20 students selected for their academic excellence in Building Studies. These interns, from Yaba College of Technology and Kano Polytechnic, will undergo a year-long, fully-funded placement where they’ll be trained in cement application under the supervision of Dangote Cement’s technical officers.

Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, Rector of Yaba College of Technology, praised Dangote Cement for its “landmark achievement in Corporate Social Responsibility,” expressing confidence in his students’ ability to meet the program’s high standards. “This initiative is a vital link between academic achievement and practical industry experience,” Abdul noted.

Dangote Cement revenue up 85.1 percent

Dangote Cement, with an annual production capacity of 52 million tonnes across 10 countries, remains the largest cement producer in Sub-Saharan Africa. The company, 86-percent owned by Aliko Dangote, has transformed Nigeria from a cement importer to a regional exporter, supplying countries like Cameroon, Congo, and Ghana.

In the first half of 2024, Dangote Cement reported an 85.1 percent surge in revenue to $1.1 billion, driven by operational efficiencies and increased market demand. The new internship program underscores the company’s commitment to investing in human capital and supporting the growth of Nigeria’s construction sector.
