Nigerian music star David Adeleke (Davido), is set to expand his influence beyond music with a new initiative aimed at empowering youth in Nigeria.

The multi-award-winning and Grammy-nominated artist recently sealed a partnership with CIG Motors, the African promoter of Chinese automobile company GAC Motors. This deal will see Davido provide vehicles to licensed drivers, establishing a new ride-hailing service in Nigeria.

The initiative is a response to the rising unemployment rates and economic hardships facing many Nigerians. With inflation eroding disposable income, Davido’s latest project aims to offer job opportunities to young, licensed drivers. The move aligns with his broader strategy of leveraging his brand for social good while expanding his business and musical endeavors.

Davido’s car project targets young drivers

In a recent interview, Davido expressed his enthusiasm for the project. “I own GAC cars. I bought the utility vehicles in the past. I already know there’s a brand that’s durable and strong. We’re planning to do a Davido-Uber kind of thing. Give the cars out to the young people that don’t have jobs. Obviously, they’re licensed drivers,” he said.

This latest venture follows Davido’s recent donation of N300 million ($200,000) to orphanages in Nigeria, continuing his commitment to philanthropy. His charitable efforts also include significant contributions in the past, with N250 million ($166 million) donated to 292 orphanages in 2021 and N237 million ($158 million) to over 400 orphanages in 2023. To date, his total donations to Nigerian orphanages have reached nearly N787 million ($0.56 million).

Davido’s growing influence and wealth

Davido’s music career remains vibrant, with his fourth studio album, Timeless, becoming the most streamed African album globally in 2023. His historic performance at Madison Square Garden and his impressive streaming numbers—4.06 million YouTube subscribers and over 8.4 million monthly Spotify listeners—underscore his status as a leading African artist.

As Davido continues to use his influence and wealth for social good, his impact on both the music industry and his community is set to grow. Forbes estimates his 2023 earnings at over $20 million, driven by a combination of royalties, brand deals, and tour performances.
