Abderrahmane Benhamadi, Condor launches new smartphone production unit
Key Points:
- Condor Electronics aims for the highest integration rate outside of India and China, producing nearly 2 million smartphones annually to boost Algeria’s economy.
- Condor’s marketing agreement with a French company enhances Algerian-made goods’ visibility abroad, with government collaboration on secure, high-quality smartphone production.
- Despite integration challenges, Condor is focused about improving rates with government support and strategic partnerships.
Condor Electronics, part of the Benhamadi Group and a leading Algerian manufacturer, made a big splash at the 55th Algiers International Fair from June 24 to 29, 2024. This event allowed Algerian businesses to showcase products and plan for the future. A major highlight was Condor’s announcement of a new smartphone production unit, a significant step in the global electronics market.
Condor Electronics showcased its modern production unit with the president of Algeria in attendance. Mohamed Salah Daas, Condor’s president, said the unit aims to have the highest integration rate outside of India and China. The facility is set to produce 6,000 smartphones daily, totaling nearly 2 million units annually. This move shows Condor’s commitment to increasing local production and reducing reliance on imported parts, boosting Algeria’s economy.
Condor announced a new marketing agreement with a French company at the event. The Algerian president stated that a French firm has been authorized to operate in Algeria, provided it sells locally made products in its large retail stores. Condor products will be included, with hopes that Algerians abroad will prefer Algerian-made goods.
Despite progress, challenges remain in achieving competitive integration rates in the electronics industry. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune highlighted these issues. Mohamed Salah Daas noted that Condor currently has about 40 percent integration in electronics and 80 percent in refrigerator production. He is optimistic about improving these rates, given the company’s experience in smartphone assembly and manufacturing.
Government and Industry Collaboration
The government and industry leaders aim to create a profitable ecosystem focused on producing secure, high-quality smartphones. Condor is dedicated to meeting European standards and obtaining Google certification for its products. However, achieving this goal requires supportive regulations.
In April, Mohamed Salah Daas confirmed that Condor is ready to resume smartphone production. This came after a key meeting at the Ministry of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, led by Ali Aoun and attended by important figures like the Ministers of Post and Telecommunications and Commerce and Export Promotion.
The focus was on improving smartphone manufacturing in Algeria. Daas emphasized that Condor is prepared to start production as soon as they get approval, showcasing their expertise in the field.
Condor’s move into smartphone production is a major move for Algeria’s electronics industry. With strong government support, strategic partnerships, and a focus on high integration rates, Condor is set to boost the national economy and become a key player in the global market.
