South African billionaire Johann Rupert, the chairman of luxury goods giant Richemont, has solidified his status as the richest individual in South Africa following a remarkable surge in his net worth. Over the past three weeks, Rupert’s wealth increased by an impressive $900 million, bringing his total net worth to $13.6 billion.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which tracks the fortunes of the world’s top 500 billionaires, Rupert remains the second-wealthiest individual on the African continent, trailing only Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote. Rupert’s net worth climbed from $12.7 billion on May 8 to $13.6 billion, averaging a daily gain of $42.86 million.

This recent boost is attributed to the strong performance of his 10.18 percent stake in Richemont. The luxury conglomerate, which boasts an array of brands including Cartier, Chloe, Dunhill, Alaïa, and Delvaux, saw its shares on the SIX Swiss Exchange rise by 7 percent since May 8. This surge in stock value has been a significant driver of Rupert’s wealth increase.

Despite navigating a landscape filled with macroeconomic and geopolitical challenges, the company’s annual sales surged to €20.6 billion ($22.4 billion), up from €19.95 billion ($21.67 billion) the previous year.

Rupert holds a substantial portion of his fortune in Richemont, owning 6.26 million “A” shares and 522 million “B” shares, which collectively give him 10.18 percent ownership of the company and control over 51 percent of its voting rights.
