South African billionaire Nicky Oppenheimer has witnessed a remarkable surge in his wealth, with a staggering $400 million increase in just 10 days, consolidating his status as the second-richest individual in South Africa and the third-wealthiest on the African continent.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which tracks the wealth of the world’s top 500 billionaires, Oppenheimer’s net worth has experienced a notable ascent, climbing from $10.2 billion on May 3 to $10.6 billion. This translates to an average daily increase of $40 million since the start of the month.

Oppenheimer climbs to 224th spot, remains South Africa’s second-richest

The recent surge in Oppenheimer’s wealth, contributing to a year-to-date gain of $725 million, is attributed primarily to the performance of his diverse investments, predominantly managed through his ventures, Stockdale Street in London and Tana Africa Capital in Johannesburg.

Currently occupying the 224th spot on the global list of the wealthiest individuals, Oppenheimer’s recent wealth surge has propelled him from 228th, solidifying his position among the elite of global wealth. In South Africa, he stands as the country’s second-richest individual, trailing only luxury goods magnate Johann Rupert, who is the chairman of Richemont.

Oppenheimer’s entrepreneurial success extends beyond financial prowess, notably marked by his influential role in the diamond industry. In a historic move in 2012, he led the sale of his family’s 40-percent stake in De Beers to the mining conglomerate Anglo-American for a staggering $5.2 billion.

Oppenheimer: Business titan and conservationist extraordinaire

Apart from his business ventures, Oppenheimer is lauded for his commitment to wilderness conservation. Together with his son, Jonathan, he co-owns Tswalu Kalahari, South Africa’s largest private game reserve, serving as a sanctuary for wildlife and championing the preservation of the region’s natural biodiversity.

He is also the proprietor of the 65,000-hectare Shangani Ranch, a vital migration route for animals that significantly contributes to the local economy by providing employment opportunities for 400 individuals and facilitating beef exports to the United Kingdom.
