In a tribute to Herbert Wigwe, co-founder and CEO of Access Corporation, Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote announced on Monday that the 120-kilometer road leading to his $20-billion petrochemical complex in Lagos will be named after the late banking executive.
The announcement was made during a special event titled, “Celebrating Herbert Wigwe – A Professional Legacy,” at Eko Hotel, Lagos. Dangote, with a net worth of $12.7 billion, described Wigwe as a dedicated mentee who played a crucial role in supporting him, his business, and his family.
The industrialist expressed his pride in naming the major refinery and petrochemical road after Wigwe, emphasizing the late banker’s commitment and expertise. “I will forever cherish the warmth of his friendship,” Dangote said.
Wigwe, one of Nigeria’s wealthiest individuals with a 9.09-percent stake in Access Holdings valued at $54 million, passed away in a helicopter crash near Nipton, Calif., nearly four weeks ago. The incident claimed the lives of Wigwe, his wife Chizoba, his son, and Nigerian lawyer Abimbola Ogunbanjo.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has issued a preliminary report on the devastating helicopter crash that resulted in the loss of Herbert Wigwe and three others. According to information obtained from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the Airbus Helicopter EC130B4 was ablaze prior to the fatal crash.
Bimbo Oladeji, NSIB’s director of public affairs and consumer protection, confirmed the receipt of the preliminary report. It revealed that adverse weather conditions led to the helicopter catching fire before crashing in Halloran Springs. The tragic incident occurred during a flight from Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, California, to Boulder City Municipal Airport in Nevada via Palm Springs International Airport.
