How Seal overcame adversity and became a music legend
Seal Henry Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel popularly known as “Seal” was born in London on Feb. 19, 1963. He is an illustrious British singer whose musical journey transcends genres and defies easy classification. His unique blend of Motown, British glam rock, and Chicago house music has garnered both critical and commercial success, highlighted by four Grammy Awards and more than 20 million records sold worldwide. His music, marked by complex rhythms and soulful melodies, reflects the influence of icons like Marvin Gaye, Jimi Hendrix, and Peter Gabriel. Seal’s most notable work, the mid-1990s hit “Kiss from a Rose,” not only captivated millions but also won three Grammy Awards and featured prominently in the 1995 movie “Batman Forever.”
Seal’s life story is a testament to resilience and determination. Born to working-class Nigerian and Brazilian parents he faced familial separation and a challenging childhood. He left school at 15 and pursued various jobs, including electrical engineering and designing leather clothing. In his early 20s, he developed lupus, which left him with prominent facial scars. Despite these challenges, his love for music led him to perform in small London clubs while living on government welfare. His career took off in 1990 with the release of “Killer,” co-written and sung by Seal, produced by Adam (“Adamski”) Tinley. The song reached number one in the UK. His debut album, “Seal” (1991), produced by Trevor Horn, gained widespread acclaim, achieving platinum status in the United States and winning him three Brit Awards.
“Seal II” (1994), his second album, also produced by Horn, delved deeper into his life experiences, including health struggles and personal trials. It featured poignant tracks like “Kiss from a Rose,” which gained iconic status through its inclusion in the “Batman Forever” soundtrack. At the 1996 Grammy Awards, the song won record of the year, song of the year, and best male pop vocal performance, solidifying Seal’s status in the music world. His subsequent albums continued to showcase his evolving artistry, leading to a fourth Grammy for best pop collaboration with vocals for his work on Herbie Hancock’s “The Imagine Project” (2010). Beyond music, Seal has appeared as a judge on Australia’s “The Voice” and participated in “The Masked Singer”.
