South African executive Bertina Engelbrecht pockets $1-million salary in 2023

South Africa’s leading executive Bertina Engelbrecht — the CEO and executive director of Clicks Group — received a total compensation package of R19.42 million ($1.03 million) from the retail-led healthcare group in 2023.

Her 2023 compensation package comprises a base salary of R9.47 million ($0.50 million) and a performance-based short-term incentive of R5.68 million ($0.301 million) — a direct reflection of her pivotal role in leading the group toward impressive financial milestones during the year.

Empowering excellence: Engelbrecht’s impact as Clicks Group CEO

Engelbrecht, the accomplished South African business executive, became group CEO of Clicks Group in January 2022. She was also awarded a long-term incentive of R3.67 million ($0.195 million) in recognition of her dedicated leadership and expertise.

Engelbrecht’s appointment is historic, as she became the first Black woman to lead a listed retail group in South Africa. Since taking on the role, she has steered Clicks Group to new heights, solidifying its position as a leader in the South African healthcare market.

With more than 880 stores and over 710 in-store pharmacies, Clicks has emerged as the premier pharmacy, health, and beauty retailer in South Africa under her tenure.

Engelbrecht drives Clicks Group to healthcare market dominance

Under Engelbrecht’s leadership, Clicks Group solidified its position as a healthcare market leader. Gross profit surged by 10.5 percent to R9.31 billion ($493.3 million) by the end of 2023, up from R8.43 billion ($446.62 million) in 2022.

Total income also rose by more than 7.6 percent to R12.16 billion ($643.93 million), compared to R11.3 billion ($598.34 million) in 2022. Assets experienced a 6.6-percent uptick, reaching R19.03 billion ($1.01 billion) in 2023 from R17.86 billion ($945.94 million) in 2022.
