Kirk Lewis, a powerhouse Black executive in the steel industry, is not just an embodiment of the transformative power of leadership that has revitalized critical sectors but also a symbol of strategic acquisitions exemplifying vision and grit, breathing new life into the industry.
Lewis, who began his career as a staff accountant for a major accounting firm in 1984 also worked for seven years in finance and budgeting at a major domestic automaker’s credit arm. He was a municipal debt analyst and later a registered investment professional.
The leading Black executive who is now at the helm of Blue Springs Metals, a billion-dollar full-service, steel processing service center, assisted in refinancing and structuring long and medium-term debt issuances. He became a profit consolidator for the credit arm, communicating with senior management about the company’s budget and variances.
Entrepreneurial vision: Filling industry gaps
In 1994, Lewis joined a Tier 1 Automotive Supplier as Finance Director, eventually rising to CFO and CEO roles. As President of a joint venture, he successfully led acquisition strategies, nearly doubling revenues over three years.
During a challenging period in the automotive industry, Lewis served as CEO of a tier-one automotive supplier, adeptly navigating industry downturns. He successfully restructured operations and finances, negotiating with creditors and achieving a 20-percent reduction in the break-even point by realigning manufacturing.
Recognizing a gap in steel supply to the automotive and oil and gas industries, Lewis founded Blue Springs Metals in 2003. As chairman and president, he expanded his steel empire with Georgetown Metal Processing in 2007, solidifying a key position in the nation’s steel distribution sector.
Further expanding his reach, Lewis established Madison Metal Processing in 2014, strengthening his presence in the Southern United States steel market. His companies, generating annual sales exceeding $160 million, have become significant contributors to economic growth, employing thousands across multiple states.

Beyond business, Lewis served as deputy mayor and chief of staff for the City of Detroit, contributing to urban revitalization efforts.
Presently, he engages in public service as chairman and president of the Council for a Strong America, a non-profit organization focusing on American manufacturing and workforce development.
