World’s highest-ranking Black CEO Roz Brewer earns $17.2-million salary from Walgreens
Roz Brewer, the world’s highest-ranking Black CEO and the first Black executive to hold a position at an S&P 500 company, was awarded a compensation package of $17.29 million by Walgreens Boots Alliance for her contributions to the financial success of the Illinois-based group.
Brewer, widely known as “Roz Brewer,” achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Black executive to hold a position at an S&P 500 company when she assumed her role as the CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance on March 15, 2021.
Her career has been marked by a track record of success in leading large, complex global organizations, implementing marketing, technology, and innovation initiatives in large-scale operations, and championing diversity and inclusion initiatives in large organizations.
While Brewer’s 2022 compensation package is undeniably substantial, it represents a 39-percent decrease from the previous year’s total reward of $28.3 million.
Her compensation package in 2022 includes a base salary of $1.5 million, supplemented by a performance-based short-term incentive of $3.57 million, attributed to the company’s financial year performance and Brewer’s exemplary leadership at Walgreens.
Roz Brewer’s 2022 long-term incentive award totals $11.5 million
In recognition of her unwavering dedication, extensive experience, business acumen, and leadership prowess, Brewer also received a long-term incentive award amounting to $11.5 million from Walgreens Boots Alliance.
This U.S. holding company, headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois, owns and operates renowned retail pharmacy chains, including Walgreens in the United States, Boots in the UK, and several pharmaceutical manufacturing and distribution companies.
Brewer’s contributions played a pivotal role in managing the group and executing strategies developed with the Board. As the former CEO of Walgreens, she was the first woman to lead an S&P 500 company, a testament to her trailblazing leadership.
Prior to her tenure at Walgreens, Brewer served as the group president and COO of Starbucks, becoming the first Black woman to hold this prestigious position. In this role, she successfully oversaw businesses in the United States, Canada, and Latin America.
Apart from her executive and governance roles, Brewer owns a minority 0.043-percent stake in Walgreens Boots Alliance, which translates to a total of 369,945 shares — a stake presently valued at $8.2 million.
