Abducted Indian-Kenyan Sugar billionaire Jaswant Singh Rai released
Jaswant Singh Rai, a prominent figure in the Kenyan sugar industry and chairman of Kabras Sugar, has been released by his captors, his attorney, Senior Counsel Kioko Kilumkumi, has confirmed.
As reported by the Daily Nation, the business magnate regained his freedom on Sunday evening, two days after his abduction took place at a junction along Wood Avenue in Kilimani on Friday, August 25.
The attorney stated that the businessman, though visibly shaken, has reunited with his family and is in satisfactory condition. However, he has refrained from disclosing the identity of those responsible for his abduction.
The billionaire disappeared when his vehicle was ambushed at a junction in the upscale Kilimani district of Nairobi around 4 pm. The attackers, driving a grey double-cab pick-up, forcefully extracted the occupants of Rai’s car and sped away, leaving the tycoon’s vehicle unattended on the roadway.
CCTV footage capturing the incident depicted four individuals disembarking from the pick-up and coercing the occupants of Rai’s car into their vehicle before hastily departing the scene.
Authorities from the Kenyan Police promptly disavowed any connection to the abduction, refuting claims propagated by various media outlets.
Jaswant Singh Rai, a member of the influential Rai family renowned as one of the nation’s wealthiest families and proprietors of the Sarrai Group, wields significant control over Kenya’s edible oil and sugar sectors. The kidnapping is thought to be connected to business rivalries within the sugar industry.
