South Africa’s second-richest man Nicky Oppenheimer has seen his net worth soar above the $9-billion mark, fueled by the substantial boost in the valuation of his private equity investments.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which tracks the wealth of the world’s wealthiest individuals, Nicky Oppenheimer’s fortune currently stands at an impressive $9.05 billion.
Data tracked by Billionaires.Africa, reveals that Oppenheimer’s net worth has surged by $1.03 billion since the beginning of 2023. His fortune has skyrocketed from $8.03 billion at the start of the year to $9.05 billion.
This substantial increase further solidifies his position as the third-richest person in Africa. It earns him a coveted spot among the African billionaires who have witnessed wealth gains exceeding $1 billion this year. According to Bloomberg’s data, among them is fellow South African billionaire Johann Rupert, whose wealth has climbed by over $2.4 billion.
Oppenheimer‘s notable achievement can be attributed to his influential role in the diamond industry. In 2012, he garnered global attention by selling his family’s 40-percent stake in De Beers, a renowned diamond producer, to the mining conglomerate Anglo-American for a staggering $5.2 billion.
In addition to this impressive transaction, Oppenheimer received $390 million in dividends from Anglo-American.
However, his private equity investments managed through Stockdale Street in London and Tana Africa Capital in Johannesburg have contributed significantly to the $1.03 billion increase in Oppenheimer’s wealth since the beginning of the year. His strategic investments across Africa, Asia, the United States, and Europe have proven fruitful, showcasing his keen business acumen.
Beyond his illustrious business ventures, Oppenheimer is widely recognized for his unwavering commitment to wilderness conservation. Together with his son, Jonathan, he co-owns Tswalu Kalahari, the largest private game reserve in South Africa.
This sanctuary provides a safe haven for wildlife and plays a crucial role in preserving the region’s natural biodiversity.
Furthermore, Oppenheimer’s ownership of the 65,000-hectare Shangani Ranch, serving as a vital migration route for animals, has not only contributed to the local economy by employing 400 individuals but has also facilitated beef exports to the United Kingdom.
