Joseph Siaw Agyepong’s group, ZeroNox, unite for fleet retrofit electrification project

Jospong Group of Companies, owned by Ghanaian businessman Joseph Siaw Agyepong, has partnered with US-based renewable energy group, ZeroNox Inc., to develop clean technology solutions in Africa.

The Agyepong-led conglomerate and the sustainable, off-highway vehicle electrification provider signed a Memorandum of Understanding and launched the world’s largest fleet retrofit electrification project. This initiative aims to promote the distribution of electric vehicles and related technology throughout Africa, with Ghana serving as the gateway.

As part of the partnership, ZeroNox will retrofit 1,000 refuse trucks from Zoomlion, a Jospong Group subsidiary, with the ZeroNox Electric Powertrain Platform, converting them from gas to electric power. A prototype of the all-electric refuse truck was presented during the event, marking a significant achievement in the Refuse Truck Electrification Project.

Agyepong, the founder and executive chairman of the Jospong Group and Zoomlion Ghana, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating that it holds excellent prospects for the sustainability agenda of Ghana and Africa as a whole.

“I am delighted about this partnership, which holds great prospects for the sustainability agenda of Ghana and Africa. I am very pleased to see that the Jospong Group is leading the transition to green energy by powering our fleet with ZeroNox’s highly differentiated technology,” Agyepong said.

“We believe this is a game-changing collaboration that will result in the mutual benefit of our people,” he added.

The project is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 400,000 metric tons over five years, equivalent to 18 million mature trees, and generate savings of $323 million over the same period. The initiative will also promote sustainable, off-highway vehicle electrification in Africa, paving the way for a greener future for the continent.

The partnership between Jospong Group and ZeroNox represents a significant step towards promoting the use of electric vehicles in Africa. The retrofitting of 1,000 refuse trucks with the ZeroNox Electric Powertrain Platform is expected to improve air quality in Ghana and reduce carbon emissions.

Agyepong founded Jospong Group as a printing press in 1995. Today, it has become one of the largest conglomerates in Ghana, with business interests in over 14 sectors and 60 subsidiaries operating in Africa and Asia. Its operations cover a range of sectors, including waste management, ICT, printing and publishing, agriculture, finance, and logistics.
