Somali mogul Abdirashid Duale’s Dahabshiil spearheads fund mobilization for drought relief
Somali multimillionaire businessman Abdirashid Duale and his multinational money transfer corporation, Dahabshiil, are taking the initiative to raise millions of dollars toward relieving the suffering of those affected by the recent droughts in the region.
As families, particularly women, and children, are forced to walk long distances in search of food, water, and medical assistance, Duale and Dahabshiil are spearheading the local community’s efforts to assist those in need, while much of the attention is on foreign aid.
In an effort to alleviate the devastating effects of the ongoing drought in the region, which has left almost 20 million people facing starvation, Dahabshiil organized a sporting event over the weekend to raise awareness and support those affected in the Somali regions.
According to Duale, Dahabshiil Group’s CEO, the tournament was about more than just sports. “We realize that sport brings people together and through this tournament, we aim to draw support to raise funds for those who are suffering,” Duale said.
He expressed immense pride in his colleagues for participating in the tournament to support those affected by the drought, climate change, and displacement. He declared that it is completely unacceptable to simply stand by and watch as people, particularly women, and children, suffer and die due to the ongoing drought crisis.
Abdirashid Duale and Dahabshiil’s extensive philanthropic contributions
Duale and his multinational money transfer corporation, Dahabshiil, have demonstrated their commitment to social responsibility through several charitable contributions to those affected by disasters and tragedies.
In response to the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, the corporation donated TRY2 million ($107,000) to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD Baskanlik) to aid affected families, showing solidarity and support for the Turkish government and people.
Dahabshiil three months ago donated $500,000 to assist the families of those killed in the bombing in Mogadishu, with $250,000 used to support those injured during the attacks and $250,000 given to small traders who lost their businesses.
In April 2022, Duale collaborated with other business leaders to raise $8 million for the rebuilding of Waaheen Market, a project initiated by Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi.
