Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), a multinational cloud computing service provider, has announced the opening of its first office in Lagos, Nigeria, as part of its global expansion and commitment to Africa.
AWS is a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc., a leading technology company founded by the world’s third-richest man, Jeff Bezos, and focused on e-commerce, cloud computing, online advertising, digital streaming, and artificial intelligence.
The decision to establish operations in Lagos, Nigeria’s financial and commercial capital, comes more than a year after Amazon opened its first African office in South Africa with a R4-billion ($220.7 million) real estate investment.
The new Lagos office, which will assist organizations of all sizes, including startups, enterprises, and public sector agencies, in transitioning to AWS Cloud, is part of AWS’s support for Nigeria’s growing number of customers and partners.
AWS stated that by opening a Lagos office, it will be better positioned to address the increased customer and partner adoption of AWS services in Nigeria, as well as to support new and existing customers looking to use its products and services to innovate, lower IT costs, and grow their organizations in the cloud.
Amrote Abdella, AWS’s regional manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, commented on the move, stating: “AWS is excited to open its first AWS office in Lagos, a city that offers a highly skilled and creative talent pool, as well as home to many fast-growing startups and notable Nigerian enterprises leading the way in digital innovation.”
AWS’s presence in Nigeria, according to Abdella, will foster the country’s pioneering spirit and assist customers in accelerating their digital transformation as they deliver innovative new products and services to the Nigerian community.
The new Lagos office, which represents AWS’s latest investment in Africa, makes Amazon the third U.S. technology behemoth to set up shop in Nigeria, joining Microsoft and Google, which already have offices in the country.
