IHS Holding, a leading telecom infrastructure firm led by American-Nigerian telecom tycoon Sam Darwish, has announced plans to extend Project Green as part of its carbon footprint reduction efforts in Africa, at a cost of $214 million between now and 2024.
According to a press release issued by the telecom infrastructure firm, the Carbon Reduction Roadmap, the next step in its Project Green initiative, will provide a comprehensive strategy for reducing IHS Towers’ emissions, particularly in locations where reliance on diesel generators has historically been greater.
The comprehensive strategy aimed at reducing Africa’s carbon footprint will play an instrumental role in reducing the emission intensity of IHS Holding’s tower portfolio by half by 2030, using emissions data from 2021 as a baseline.
The move will cover IHS operations in Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Kuwait, Nigeria, Rwanda, Zambia, and other countries where reliance on diesel generators has been greater than elsewhere and will see the telecom infrastructure firm invest $214 million between 2022 and 2024.
The telecom infrastructure firm explained that savings will be achieved by connecting more sites to the electricity grid and via the deployment and integration of battery storage and solar panel solutions in places where reliance on diesel generators has been traditionally greater.
“We believe our business model is inherently sustainable because we deliver shared infrastructure solutions in emerging markets that promote digital connectivity and inclusion and improve the lives of the communities we serve,” Sam Darwish said, chairman and CEO of IHS Towers Holding.
He went on to state that the Carbon Reduction Roadmap is the next step in IHS’s journey to reduce its carbon footprint by establishing measurable emission targets.
IHS Holding is a Nigeria-based telecom infrastructure firm. The group is the largest telecom infrastructure group in Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East by tower count, and the third-largest independent multinational tower company internationally.
Darwish, who founded IHS in 2001, owns 3.5 percent of the telecom infrastructure company.
