South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe donates $2 million to flood victims
Patrice Motsepe, a billionaire businessman and the president of the Confederation of African Football, has pledged R30 million ($2.04 million) to flood victims in KwaZulu-Natal, which he wants utilized as soon as possible.
On Saturday, he was part of a high-powered group that visited various flood-affected towns in Durban, including Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala and pastors and leaders of faith-based organizations.
He toured numerous towns with his wife, Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe, to inspect the devastation wrought by floods and send condolence messages to mourning families.
Motsepe offered his assistance after witnessing the devastation caused by the floods.
Families in the Tshelimnyama area, near Pinetown, where many people died, were visited by the delegation.
Motsepe said he met the Zulu monarch early this year, when a committee was formed to guarantee that the donated cash were distributed to needy families as soon as possible.
The committee, he claimed, would include of 25 faith-based organizations, government officials, and traditional leaders.
“We came here to make a humble donation of R30 million ($2.04 million) to help our people. We had a meeting and visited many places. People are suffering the way floods have affected their lives,” he said.
Motsepe’s charity was praised by King Misuzulu, who praised his foundation for always “being there when it is needed.”
The monarch expressed his gratitude for the Motsepe Foundation’s contribution, which he claimed has aided numerous communities in the province with water supply.
