Phuthuma Nhleko exits MTN International Advisory Board

MTN Group has announced the exit of one of Africa’s top C-suite executives Phuthuma Nhleko from its International Advisory Board (IAB), IT Web reported.

MTN Group is a leading pan-African telecom company.

“MTN wishes to advise shareholders that Phuthuma Nhleko has stepped down from the IAB, effective 6 August 2021,” MTN said in a statement. “Phuthuma’s contribution to the IAB, since 2019, has been invaluable, and the board of directors of MTN wishes to extend its gratitude for his exemplary leadership and dedication to MTN and to his role as a member of the IAB.”

Nhleko served as a member of the IAB since its inception in 2019 and was the former CEO and executive chairman of MTN Group until his retirement in 2019.

He led MTN between 2002 and 2019.

In May, Nkleko was appointed to the board of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) as an independent non-executive director, effective July 1. He is expected to chair the local bourse by 2022.

He currently serves as a member of the JSE’s group remuneration committee, nominations committee and deal committee.

MTN’s IAB was established in July 2019 to counsel, guide and support the group in fulfilling its vision and objectives.

The IAB is chaired by former South African President Thabo Mbeki and a crop of eminent global leaders, including former Ghanaian President John Kufuor, former African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs Aisha Abdullahi, former Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Mohammed el Baradei and former President of Marketing and Services at Total SA Momar Nguer.
