Tanzanian billionaire Mohammed “Mo” Dewji has donated Sh100 million ($43,122) to a child cancer care organization through his Mo Dewiji Foundation.
Tumaini La Maisha (TLM) is a collection of three NGOs working for a single aim, to provide free and curative care for all children with cancer in Tanzania.
The NGO is on a mission to ensure that children with cancer in Tanzania are diagnosed early to enable treatment with a curative intent and to have appropriate access to good quality pediatric oncology services.
The donation was made during a brief ceremony at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) in Tanzania.
The NGO will channel the funds into supporting more than 2,000 children undergoing childhood cancer treatment at the MNH.
The NGO has been actively facilitating the treatment of children who have cancer across the country. It houses over 700 children undergoing cancer treatment and dialysis.
While expressing his gratitude to the Mo Dewji Foundation, TLM Chairman of the Board Gerald Mongella called on other well-wishers to support the treatment of children with cancer in the East African country.
“We call other organizations, individuals to emulate Mo Dewij Foundation because cancer treatment is expensive as it can cost up to Sh21 million for one child,” Mongella said. Sh21 million is approximately $9,055.

Mo Dewji is a former politician and the owner of MeTL Group, a diversified Tanzania-based conglomerate that employs more than 24,000 people.
METL’s diversified footprints cut across the textile manufacturing, flour milling, beverages and edible oils sectors in eastern, southern and central Africa. It operates in about six African countries.
Forbes’s real-time net worth pegs the billionaire’s wealth to $1.6 billion. He is the country’s only billionaire.
