Egypt awards Maghagha wastewater treatment plant project to Hassan Allam Construction

by Ishioma Emi

The Egyptian Housing and Urban Development Ministry has awarded Hassan Allam Construction a project to build the Maghagha wastewater treatment plant on the left bank of the Nile River.

The plant is part of the government’s strategy to improve sanitation services and access in rural areas where the connection rate is relatively low.

Hassan Allam Construction will execute the plant’s engineering, procurement and construction works.

Hassan Allam Construction is a subsidiary of Hassan Allam Holding S.A.E, a conglomerate owned by Egypt’s Hassan Allam family.

The conglomerate is one of the largest privately owned corporations in Egypt, the Middle East and North Africa.

The deal will see the company construct a 30,000-cubic-meter-per-day capacity plant, which is expandable to 60,000 cubic meters per day, Afrik 21 reported.

The project aims to improve the collection and treatment of effluent (liquid waste) that contaminates water resources in the Minya governorate. The treated wastewater will be collected through sewerage networks in five villages around the town of Maghagha.

Hassan Allam Holding S.A.E

Hassan Allam Holding was founded in 1936 by Hassan Mohamed Allam as an informal construction company.

The group’s interests span civil contracting for heavy projects, infrastructure and buildings, engineering, procurement and construction for electromechanical works, and manufacturing of steel structures, concrete blocks and water transmission pipes.

In 2016, the International Financial Corporation became an equity partner in Hassan Allam Holding and was placed on its board of directors.

Amr and Hassan Allam are the co-CEOs of Hassan Allam Holding.
